Are you a grammar NERD?

Do you correct other people’s grammar?

This is not a question from the TGV rapid-fire round.

But I am curious to know whether you are obsessed with correcting someone’s grammar.

During my school days, our principal sir (who was also an English teacher) taught us the right usage of words for example the right usage while pointing one of many should be plural. I often notice people using “one of my friend” instead of “ one of my friends”.

In addition to that, he taught us how to rightly pronounce the words e.g. Third is wrongly pronounced as “Thaaard”.

Ever since I started being more observant about grammar and pronunciation.

That didn’t stop there, after embarking on the Toastmasters journey, I became a big fan of the Grammarian role which is about listening to the speaker’s speech carefully and sharing feedback on the right/wrong usage of grammar.

I also pay attention to spelling mistakes on the billboards, pamphlets, store signages, etc.

Here are a few that I found randomly on the internet. Sometimes these make me laugh and I also wonder why the DTP operators(or painters) don’t use spell-checkers or grammar-checking tools before taking the banner /collateral prints.

I realized that the condition of being obsessed with grammar is called Grammatical Pedantry Syndrome (GPS). GPS is a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is good to have this disorder as long as the analysis is not shared with others(speakers).
